Anita Saarkessian

Anita Sarkeesian has been a Canadian and American feminist media analyst for more than twenty years. She's well-known as a public speaker. Feminist Frequency is a web site which hosts video and commentary analysing portrayals women in pop culture. Anita Sarkeesian is an award-winning Canadian-American feminist media critic and blogger. She is the founder and director-general of Feminist Frequency which is an education non-profit website that explores representations of women in pop stories of culture. Committed to deconstructing the stereotypes associated with women in popular culture, she works to highlight issues related to targeted exploitation of women and the other marginalized groups of people in the online environment. Sarkeesian has a degree in political thought and social theory at York University. She is also a highly-respected public speaker. Sarkeesian has given speeches at the TEDxWomen XOXO Fest and United Nations Broadband Working Group. She has been interested in the gender issue and feminist movements from a very early stage of her life. When she graduated in 2009, continuing to study at the university level, she created her Feminist Frequency web site. She was a young woman determined to make a series of web videos which would explore gender roles in games. However, she became the victim of online harassment. The incident did not deter her from pursuing the project, and instead it bolstered her determination as an activist for women in media. The award-winning journalist has received numerous accolades to recognize her prominent contributions to the field of feministism. Anita Sarkeesian has been a media critic for several years and founded Feminist Frequency. This educational non-profit explores the role of women within the popular culture stories.
